National Nurses Week

National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. These permanent dates enhance planning and position National Nurses Week as an established recognition event. As of 1998, May 8 was designated as National Student Nurses Day, to be celebrated annually. And as of 2003, National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week (May 6-12) each year.

In celebration of Nurses Week, Christina Mas, RN, Care Coordinator for Lifestyle Medicine with Springfield Medical Care Systems shares her compelling story of why she became a nurse.

“As far back as I can recall I wanted to be a nurse as a grown up. I wanted to help people, as many of us who pursue nursing have said. I became what I had hoped to! For nearly 20 years I have cared for the very ill, dressed wounds, tended to physical and emotional pain, performed CPR., and administered life saving medications. I have learned so much about this profession, and even more so about people. I have learned about my own self. What has become the most meaningful and memorable is the power of being. Being present with someone. Truly hearing their story. Sharing words, laughter and at times even tears. The holding of a hand. Sharing a moment. It is priceless. It is what is so meaningful and memorable for both patient and nurse. I am grateful to be part of something so sacred.”
