National Nurses Week

National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. These permanent dates enhance planning and position National Nurses Week as an established recognition event. As of 1998, May 8 was designated as National Student Nurses Day, to be celebrated annually. And as of 2003, National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week (May 6-12) each year.

National Nurses Week continues, and we are pleased to share the story of Bonnie Hanley, MSN, RN-BC, CNE, Associate Professor of Nursing at Castleton University School of Nursing.

“When I started nursing school, I wanted to be a Nurse Mid-wife, but a few hours in the delivery room during a clinical class changed my mind. Next, I tried pediatric nursing, but found caring for sick children was too sad for me. Three months after graduation I heard about a nursing position in a psychiatric hospital. When I walked though the door, I found the nursing career I had been looking for. I have been a Psychiatric- Mental Health (PMH) nurse for 35 years and now I teach PMH nursing to future RNs at Castleton University.”
